Eternity. Consider all the feels that word creates in a person. Consider the permanence of such a state as eternity. I suppose that’s why lovers throughout history have exchange tokens symbolizing that eternal commitment, and why we still continue this tradition today with eternity rings. But before we get lost hopelessly in all the promises of love and adoration, let’s take a look at the poetry behind eternity rings.
The idea of these wonderful eternity rings is already eternal. The whole point of a circle is that it has no beginning and it has no end, which automatically means it is not only never-ending, but as there is no start to it, it has seemingly always been there–its permanence fait accompli. Thereby lending itself well to the idea of not just commitment between lovers, but destiny, true love, or soulmates.
Eternity rings have evolved over time, though, morphing into whatever they need to be at a given time to reflect the core of the relationship they represent. The evolution of their design has come with each new technological advancement, but each technological advancement came about because at the start of every “something new,” there was a lover doing everything they possibly could to show their love in a way unique to their partner and their relationship. Now they’re sometimes patterned, made of various metal types, and may be adorned with gems. Eternity rings can have diamonds or gemstones. They can have just one type or they can have multiple. They can be large stones or small stones. They can be natural or man-made. The possibilities are endless–or, almost eternal, I suppose.
Eternity rings aren’t just for unmarried couples. They are a symbol of everlasting commitment and love, and the occasion for presenting a partner with an eternity ring is any occasion for which one chooses to celebrate their love and pledge to one another. This could come at any time in a couple’s relationship, so if it happens to come after marriage, definitely try to make design choices that are in line with your partner’s wedding and/or engagement bands. Yes, it may seem redundant, and, yes, it may be more of the same thing, and, yes, you may end up ignoring me, but, when it comes down to it, just keep this in mind: True love should never have to clash.
Reve Diamonds of London has a wonderfully-detailed collection of eternity rings on its website. It is easy to navigate and also has background information on eternity rings, as well as how to choose the one that is right for you–or your partner. Don’t be afraid to be different and bold, however; just because your love and dedication are eternal, doesn’t always mean taste will be. So, maybe it will be a style piece, maybe it will be a bold piece, maybe it will be beautifully simple. It can be anything, and it will always be loved.
