Garden Ideas That Will Make You Want To Spend More Time Outdoors This Summer
When the weather warms up, there’s no better time to spend out in your backyard – especially if you’ve got little ones that are on school holidays! But if your garden is lacking inspiration, perhaps still recovering from a long winter, or is just feeling a bit bleh, it can be hard to find the motivation to want to actually spend any time out there.
But don’t worry – we’ve got you sorted! Here are a few easy-to-execute ideas to make your garden more exciting this summer – and it’ll be sure to encourage the whole family to get out into the backyard and enjoy the glorious sunshine!
Splash Pool
You don’t have to fork out a heap of money for a pool. Source a small plastic or blow up pool from your local department store, and the kids are guaranteed to love having a splash when the weather heats up. If you’ve got really little ones, you can even just use a large storage tub with a bit of water in it. Or, if all else fails, get out the trusty garden hose and make a fun game out of it!
Make sure you run the water from the hose away from the kids to begin with, as the water can be really hot if it’s been sitting in the hose for a while. Always make sure the kids are supervised whenever they’re around water – the perfect excuse for the grown-ups to get wet, too!
Re-Landscaping
Especially after a wet winter, you may find your yard is overgrown or overrun with weeds. Dedicate some time to re-landscaping the yard and giving it new life, and you’ll enjoy the backyard for the rest of the summer and beyond.
If you’re planting new plants, make sure you understand the conditions of your garden space including where the most sunshine hits, shady parts of the yard, and reticulation. Consider selecting native plants, as they thrive in our hot climate and are a waterwise choice. New plants can make such a difference in brightening up a garden – your family and friends will be impressed when you have them all over for summer barbeques!
Skip bins are a convenient and cost-effective way to get rid of all your garden waste, clippings and winter weeds. Simply hire a skip bin, throw in your green waste, and it’ll be taken away and turned into compost. So easy!
Shade
Nobody wants to spend time in a sunny, shadeless backyard when the temperatures are soaring. Make sure you have shade in your backyard – be it achieved through a patio, large umbrellas or shady trees. If you have a beach tent or beach umbrella, utilise them in the backyard to create a shady spot in which you can sit and enjoy the summer weather, without being in direct sunlight.
Bird Bath
This is a great way to bring some wildlife into your backyard. You’ll love hearing the bird calls from your own backyard throughout the year – and summer is a great time to install a bird bath to ensure the local birds can cool off when needed. Place the bird bath close to shrubs or hedges, so that little birds will feel safe enough to dart to the bird bath and back into the safety of the greenery. You’ll need to ensure the bird bath is out of direct sunlight, so pop it in a shady corner of the garden, or use one of the tips above to create more shade.
If you have pets, ensure the bird bath is out of their reach. Make sure you change the water regularly, and don’t underestimate how quickly the bath can dry up on a warm day, even in the shade!
Lights
You can effortlessly take your outdoor space from day to night with some feature lighting. Fairy lights are very popular in outdoor spaces, and they are so picturesque. String lights along your gazebo, umbrella, trees or fences and watch how easily it levels up your space. Lighting creates a welcoming and beautiful atmosphere for alfresco dining so that you can enjoy your garden into the evening all summer long.
Enjoy Every Moment!
During the summer, it can be so easy to get into the habit of staying inside beneath the air con. But with these simple tips to liven up your garden, the whole family will be itching to spend more time in the yard. Make the most of each of the hot days and clear, warm nights, as they won’t be around forever!
Invest in some fairy lights or other feature lighting to bring your alfresco dining experience to the next level. Re-landscape your garden that’s been neglected over winter, sourcing skip bins in Perth to remove your garden waste. Add shade, a bird bath and a splash pool for the little kids, and you’re guaranteed to have a summer to remember – all from the comfort of your backyard!
