My time at the AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts was absolutely incredible and I would recommend that anyone who wishes to study performing arts, study at this wonderful learning institute. Recently I was writing some feedback abut the college and when I read the other AMDA reviews, I couldn’t help but notice that not enough were writing about how students can get the absolute most out of this experience. Many would speak about the experience itself, but they didn’t go as far as I wanted to for future students. Because of that, I wanted to write a quick piece about how you an get the most out of a performing arts course.
Try It All
It doesn’t matter whether you have gone to the college for singing, acting or dancing, I would recommend that you give as may vocations a try as you possibly can. This is a great chance for you to really spread your wings and find out exactly what you are capable of. During my time at AMDA I met so many students who were going to be dancers who had previously been singers, some who went into set design despite airing as a musician and many more who made the switch when they realized just how much talent they had in other areas.
Open Yourself
Something which you have to be prepared for is some brutal criticism and this is not going to be easy to take. Having said this, I never received criticism which I felt was unjust or unwarranted, on the contrary in fact. The temptation after you get your first dressing down or critique is to not allow anyone to do that to you again, but you have too constantly leave yourself open to this if you wish to get better. Be bold, be brave and create work which you are proud of, then listen to the criticism and let that help you in the future.
Don’t Socialize
Seriously I saw so many who thought that studying the performing arts was going to be one big party and what happened to those people was that they ended up failing terribly or worse, they ended up leaving the college. Studying performing arts is not like studying at there colleges and there is far less of a social scene here. What you have to think about is the amazing opportunity that this course is giving you, to forge a career in something that you love and you are genuinely passionate about. This is very rare and not everyone has the chance to do it. This is not to say that there isn’t time to have some fun, but if you are dead set on partying your way through college then this is not for you.
Work hard, try as much as you can, be brave and be open to new ideas, you’ll have the time of your life.
