Is The Consumer Really Deleveraging?

Is The Consumer Really Deleveraging?
This morning my friend Cullen Roche at PragCap (a daily must read site as I have stated before) posted an excellent piece by Richard Koo discussing the "balance sheet recession." Cullen's accompanying points are critical to understanding where we are in the current credit cycle and the long term implications for organic economic growth to resume. Koo states: “If people who had been paying down debt to repair their balance sheets had actually resumed borrowing, it would mean that balance sheet...

LEI - Revisions Show Slower Growth

LEI - Revisions Show Slower Growth
The Conference Board released the LEI index with a full set of backward revisions which showed that LEI has been growing slower than estimated since end of the last financial crisis. There have been plenty of seasonal distortions, as well as from Hurricane Sandy, which have made for a bumpy ride in the LEI in recent months.  However, as always, the month to month data points have little to do with the direction and trend of the overall economy.  However, not surprisingly, the index was up 0.5% to 93.9...

The Visible Hand Of The Fed

The Visible Hand Of The Fed
There has been an burst of exuberance as of late as the market, after four arduous years, got back to its pre-crisis levels.  Much has been attributed to the recent burst of optimism in the financial markets from: 1) Better than expected earnings - not counting the fact that expectations had been dramatically lowered over the last quarter.  If you lower the bar enough you will get better results.  However, if expectations levels had remained where they were previously every single report would have...

Chart Of The Day: Economic Policy Uncertainty

Chart Of The Day: Economic Policy Uncertainty
In recent weeks there has been an overwhelming surge of bullishness based on the idea that with the "fiscal cliff" issue now resolved, and the "debt ceiling" being pushed off well into the future, that the "uncertainty" that has been constraining business investment has now faded.  The unleashing of the hoards of cash that have amassed on the sidelines in recent years should propel the economy back to above trend growth for years to come.    The problem is that while market participants have become...

Chart Of The Day: Richmond Fed Survey

Chart Of The Day: Richmond Fed Survey
The latest release of the Richmond Federal Reserve Manufacturing Survey showed little to excited about. The current survey tacks onto the New York and Philadelphia Fed surveys showing the boost of activity, as we originally expected, from Hurricane Sandy is now fading. For the month of January the Richmond region showed a decline to -12 after two previous months of gains. The chart of the composite index, however, doesn't really show the underlying weakness in the subcategories. The chart of...

The Real Housing Recovery Story

The Real Housing Recovery Story
Imagine that your financial advisor called you up one day and said: "Great news...your investment portfolio gained 1% in January which is an annualized return of 12%.  However, we have to subtract .05% from that return because historically January's return has only been 0.95% since 1950.  This brings our seasonally adjusted return to 11.4%."   Of course, after the SEC pays a visit to the advisor to correct his performance reporting measures, the simple reality is that "what you see is what you...

Pray The Bond Bubble Doesn't Pop

Pray The Bond Bubble Doesn't Pop
There is no doubt that we are in the process of potentially creating one of the largest asset bubbles in history.  While many financial analysts, asset managers and the overly optimistic media will rapidly disagree with that statement – it is important to note that none of the aforementioned experts have ever identified a bubble in advance.  In fact, as we discussed last week, the backdrop of current optimism is far too reminiscent of previous points in history where bubbles were already well into...

Bullish Optimism Beginning To Reach Extremes

Bullish Optimism Beginning To Reach Extremes
Since the end of last year the bullish optimism for 2013 has risen to an almost fevered pitch.  Concerns of any further disruption from the Eurozone have faded into the mist.  With the "fiscal cliff" issue resolved, and little concern that the "debt ceiling" will not be raised, the worries of a domestic drag have been all but alleviated.  Furthermore, despite slowing earnings and revenue growth, the outlook for 2013 earnings growth is remarkably ebullient.  According to the vast majority of the media,...

Getting Started With A Budget

Getting Started With A Budget
For most American families the dirtiest 4-letter word in the household is "BUDGET."  Nothing brings more fear, panic and shear emotion than discussing a budget with a spouse particularly when one feels that they are under attack for potentially bad behavior.  However, a budget is a must in order for anyone to achieve success in building wealth over the long term.  The interview covers some of the basic ideas of where to start.  However, just getting started is typically the toughest part.  While living...
